Dr. Friedman’s main focus is on “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DoHAD)”- particularly the mechanisms by which maternal diet, obesity, and Gestational Diabetes impacts infant and child health in the next generation. He has demonstrated that maternal diet causes persistent changes in the epigenome, microbiome and offspring behavior. Importantly, his human studies show that maternal BMI in women with Gestational Diabetes predicts newborn intrahepatocellular lipid storage, suggesting risk factors for pediatric obesity/ NAFLD begin operating in early life (even in utero) and may permanently change the body’s structure, physiology, and metabolism, leading to an increased lifetime disease risk and/or disease acceleration (JCI-insights, 2017). Since 2012, he focused on understanding how maternal diet impacted infant microbiome (MB) in human neonates and in germ-free (GF) mice.
