Japan is the largest aerospace industrial market in Asia, with a current aerospace production value in excess of 2 trillion YEN. Starting with the licensed production of defense aircraft, satellites and launch vehicles, the Japanese aerospace industry has built its own capabilities in indigenous development.

 

Although the Japanese aerospace industry is still relatively small compared with the automobile, home electronic and computer industries, it shows a huge potential for growth in the near future as a qualified partner in the global aerospace industry.

In the defense sector, Japan adopted new principles and guidelines for arms exports, the first major overhaul of its arms embargo policy in nearly half a century. Japan will now allow arms exports only if they serve the purpose of contributing to international cooperation and its security interests. Stable production is expected on the defense side in line with increased Defense Ministry’s procurement related to mass production of the P-1 maritime patrol aircraft, C-2 transport aircraft, and the F35 fighter. With 2018 Defense budgets higher than ever, Japan’s growth potential is huge in the near future as a qualified partner in the global aerospace industry.

In the civil aircraft market, Japanese manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), and Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), supply about 35% of the content for the Boeing 787 and 21% of the Boeing 777. Thus, the aerospace business on the commercial side is influenced by the success of Boeing programs.

The United States is the world's leading military and defense supplier and well-positioned with technology and trade policy to increase its share of the growing 2018 defense budgets in Japan. The recent passing of legislation that would permit Tokyo to dispatch their Self-Defense Forces overseas and strengthen ties with the U.S. military and American allies gives American exhibitors a market advantage at Japan Aerospace 2018. Japan’s defense spending continues to be driven by concerns about North Korea and Chinese maritime activities.

Japan continues to offer a lucrative market for imported aircraft, aircraft parts, and engines. U.S. firms are present with opportunities in the market as the Japanese industry undertakes international projects, develops transport and patrol aircraft for defense, and develops small jets and small jet engines for civil aviation.

The development and manufacturing of defense aircraft was a base of the Japanese aerospace industry. In the past 20 years, fighters, observation helicopters, trainers, amphibious flying boats, patrol aircraft and cargo aircraft have been successfully developed and produced. Nowadays, Japanese firms have achieved world-class level in the components and materials by creating unified supply chains which are able to provide complete end-to-end services in Japan and overseas. These firms cooperate with important partners in airframe production and engine parts included major global companies such as Boeing, Airbus, GE, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce. The current examples of these activities are participation in the development and production of the 787 Dreamliner with Boeing in which the total work share of Japanese firms accounts for approximately 35% and the A380 program in which about 20 Japanese firms are participating as suppliers.

World Class Launch Vehicles & Satellites

Japan is in the fourth position amongst satellite-launching countries, coming after Russia, the U.S. and France. As of the end of 2013, more than 30 scientific and experimental satellites and more than 50 application satellites have been developed and launched in Japan. Nowadays, the space industry in Japan is actively committed to the ISS program, in which 16 countries participate, as well as other international joint development programs as a part of its comprehensive space development. Currently, Japan operates the H-IIA and H-IIB, which rival any of the world’s topclass liquid propellant launch vehicles, and the Epsilon is among the most newly developed solid propellant launch vehicles and was successfully launched in September, 2013. Japan retains the ability to explore and utilize space in an independent manner.
