Mexico’s aerospace and defense industry has taken off in the past five or six years, progressing from "harness-assembly capabilities to producing full structural aircraft components, composite airframes and micro-tolerance turbine parts," according to this 2015 PWC report. With more than 300 “aeronautical” companies, $6.4 billion in exports, a workforce of some 45,000 and a particularly robust MRO sector, the country currently ranks as the 14th largest aerospace and defense producer in the world, and it’s set its sights set on breaking into the Top 10 by 2020.


However you do the math, Mexico’s path to that tier of performance — outlined in the government’s “Pro-Aeréo 2012-2020” plans (and given extra context by this translated report from Machine Shop Mexico) — is paved with goals for increasing employment, output and revenue. The target is 14% annual growth leading to more than $12 billion in exports by 2020.

FAMEX 2017 is the showcase for Mexico’s proud aerospace industry, and an open invitation for any supplier that wants to capitalize on the country’s momentum to compete for a place on the team. Covering 110,000 sqm of indoor and outdoor display space spread over five halls at the Santa Lucia Air Force Base, Zumpango, FAMEX 2017 will present a cross-section of Mexico’s civil aviation, space, and military aeronautics sectors. Show organizers — the Mexican Ministry of Defense (SEDENA) and its Air Force (FAM) — are looking to build on the success of the inaugural 2015 event, which hosted nearly 33,000 trade attendees including 16 foreign delegations and 240 exhibitors.

Mexico is on a "buying spree."

Much has been made of Mexico's burgeoning industry infrastructure, but the country is also spending billions on American equipment and supplies. U.S. exhibitors will be primed for profitable partnerships at FAMEX.

FAMEX is approved by the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) and the Mexican Air Force. It is organized around these four core market sectors.

Civil Aviation
To serve the growing demand for air travel in its growing economy, Mexico has launched several large infrastructure projects for airport development and expansion.

Military Aviation
While SEDENA has made a commitment to aeronautics development and manufacturing, it is on a "buying spree" for U.S.military equipment; more than $1 billion in foreign military sales in 2015, according to the DSCA, including three Blackhawk helicopters to add to the 18 ordered in April 2014. According to the Washington Post, Admiral William E. Gortney, the commander of Northern Command, the U.S. military headquarters that deals with Mexico, testified to Congress in 2015 that Mexico’s buying binge represented a “100-fold increase from prior years.”

Defense Systems
Mexico’s military is modernizing and spending more specifically to combat drug trafficking with new surveillance equipment, advanced weapons and technology.
